Albuquerque pediatric surgeon Guy Rosenschein, 68, has been sentenced to over 17 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of distributing and one count of possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The grim details of his crimes, uncovered over years of investigation, expose a calculated betrayal of trust by a man sworn to heal children.
Rosenschein, once employed at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, first drew law enforcement scrutiny in 2016 following two CyberTipline Reports filed by online chat provider Chatstep. The reports flagged a user in Albuquerque sharing CSAM. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) forwarded the alerts to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which passed the case to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) for investigation.
BCSO detectives traced the illicit posts to Rosenschein’s residence. A search of his home uncovered multiple electronic devices loaded with CSAM—totaling approximately 19,116 images and 2,092 videos of abused minors. But the horror didn’t end there. The FBI later learned of a hidden room behind a false wall beneath the stairs, containing two safes. Inside one, agents found even more child pornography, stashed like a sick archive.
The investigation revealed Rosenschein’s disturbing reach beyond New Mexico. He worked as a pediatric surgeon in New York, Arkansas, and Missouri, where authorities uncovered allegations of him grooming and sexually abusing young male patients. To date, three victims have been identified. Criminal charges are pending in Arkansas related to two of them, deepening the scope of his predatory conduct.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez condemned Rosenschein’s actions as “shameful and heinous,” stressing that possession and distribution of CSAM perpetuate ongoing trauma and fuel the exploitation of children. “It is all the more egregious that the offender in this case was a pediatric surgeon,” Uballez said. “Using a position of trust to exploit the most vulnerable should always come with the maximum penalties under the law.”
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen echoed the outrage, praising the ICAC team and FBI for their relentless work. Sheriff Allen called it “a heartbreaking example of true evil lurking in our community.” Upon release, Rosenschein will face 10 years of supervised release and lifetime registration as a sex offender—punishment that, while severe, can’t undo the damage he inflicted.
