TUCSON, AZ – Michael Elton Tillman, 55, is headed to federal prison for 63 months after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Rosemary Márquez handed down the sentence last week, along with three years of supervised release. Tillman’s criminal history, including a prior manslaughter conviction, played a significant role in the sentencing.
The case unfolded earlier this year when Tillman brazenly sold a loaded Arsenal 7.62×39 mm pistol and 100 rounds of ammunition to an undercover federal agent for $1,000 on May 5, 2022. This wasn’t a one-off transaction; a subsequent search of Tillman’s Tucson apartment revealed a cache of weapons and narcotics. Agents discovered a loaded Taurus 9 mm pistol, along with a substantial amount of 9 mm, .380 caliber, and 7.62×39 mm ammunition.
But the haul didn’t stop at firearms. Investigators also found narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a significant amount of U.S. currency within Tillman’s residence. Ballistics analysis confirmed that both the Arsenal pistol and the Taurus handgun had crossed state lines, establishing federal jurisdiction. The ATF traced the firearms, cementing the case as a violation of federal law prohibiting convicted felons from owning guns.
Tillman’s past is riddled with felony convictions in Arizona, culminating in the manslaughter charge that initially barred him from legally possessing any firearms. Despite this, he actively engaged in the illegal sale of a handgun, demonstrating a clear disregard for the law and public safety. The ATF’s investigation built a solid case, leaving Tillman with little room to maneuver.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon Bolling, of the District of Arizona in Tucson, spearheaded the prosecution, successfully arguing for a substantial prison sentence. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation, meticulously gathering evidence that led to Tillman’s conviction. This case serves as a stark reminder that those with prior convictions who attempt to illegally acquire firearms will face serious consequences.
The sentencing of Tillman is the latest example of the ATF’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking and remove dangerous weapons from the streets of Arizona. While 63 months won’t undo the harm caused by Tillman’s past actions, it does send a message: illegally peddling firearms will land you in a federal cell, and the feds won’t be shy about throwing the book at you. The Phoenix Field Division handled the investigation.
