Michael Johnson, Armed Career Criminal, Sentenced on Gun Charges, Arizona 2026
Phoenix, AZ – In a move to crack down on gun violence, a federal judge sentenced Michael Johnson, 32, of Phoenix, to 10 years in prison for carrying a gun in a public place, a felony offense.
According to the Department of Justice, USAO, Johnson was caught by security personnel at a mall in Savannah, Georgia, carrying a handgun without a permit. He had previously served time for robbery and was an armed career criminal, making him subject to enhanced penalties.
Johnson’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters, who also ordered him to pay $500 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.
In a separate case, 29-year-old Tyrone Brown of Tucson was sentenced to 5 years in prison for firing shots in a residential neighborhood. Brown had previously been convicted of assault and was prohibited from possessing firearms.
According to court documents, Brown fired several rounds from a handgun into the air in a neighborhood in Tucson, causing panic and putting innocent lives at risk. He was caught by police and charged with discharging a firearm in a public place and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, Gary M. Restaino, praised the work of law enforcement in bringing these cases to justice. ‘These sentences demonstrate our commitment to keeping our communities safe from gun violence and holding accountable those who would put innocent lives at risk,’ he said.
The cases were investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Tucson Police Department, with assistance from the Phoenix Police Department.
