Tallahassee Man Sentenced for Possessing Firearm as Convicted Felon
A 40-year-old Tallahassee man, Michael Townsend Anthony, has been sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Robert L. Hinkle on [no date given] in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, the case against Anthony began on August 13, 2013, when officers from the Tallahassee Police stopped Anthony’s vehicle due to illegally tinted windows. A police canine alerted to the presence of controlled substances, leading to the discovery of crack cocaine, oxycodone, and drug packaging in the vehicle. Additionally, a loaded 9 millimeter pistol and two loaded 12-gauge shotguns were found in the car.
Anthony, who had previously been convicted of three or more crimes of violence committed on separate occasions, faced a minimum 15-year term of imprisonment. The government noted that Anthony had 18 prior felony convictions and had only been out of custody for limited periods since 1991. Anthony was last released from the Florida Department of Corrections in June 2012, 13 months before the new arrest.
At sentencing, the government also imposed a 5-year term of supervision to be served upon release from custody and a $100 special monetary assessment. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael T. Simpson, with the support of the Tallahassee Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
The sentencing of Michael Townsend Anthony serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The Tallahassee community can be grateful for the joint efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.
