ABINGDON, Va. — In a chilling turn of justice, Michael Donivan White, 36, has pled guilty to federal charges for the heinous murder of Big Stone Gap Police Officer Michael Chandler and a sprawling drug conspiracy.
In a courtroom today, White faced eight counts including causing death by firearm, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a stolen firearm. The plea comes in the wake of Officer Chandler’s tragic death during an attempted drug bust that turned violent.
United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh emphasized, ‘Big Stone Gap Police Officer Michael Chandler died serving his community. Our hope is that today’s guilty plea brings some semblance of peace to his family and fellow law enforcement.’
Craig Kailimai of the ATF Washington Field Division echoed sentiments of justice, stating, ‘Our prayers go out to Officer Chandler’s family. Mr. White must be held accountable for his actions.’
According to court documents, White was part of a drug conspiracy that distributed over 15 kilograms of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl from August 2021 until his arrest in October 2022.
The shooting occurred on November 13, 2021. Officer Chandler responded to a call at 2505 Orr Street, where White opened fire with a Taurus 9mm pistol, mortally wounding the officer before fleeing the scene. The firearm was later found and linked back to White through ballistics testing.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). As justice is served, the community mourns the loss of Officer Chandler and honors his dedication to protecting them.
