Michigan Man Charged with Sexual Abuse of a Minor
A federal indictment has been brought against Matthew Boyd, 32, of Warren, Michigan, for engaging in two separate sexual acts with a minor in August 2009 while at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine.
According to the indictment, the minor was older than 12 but not yet 16 years old at the time of the alleged abuse. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated the case.
Boyd is expected to have his initial court appearance later today in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Boyd was arrested in Michigan and his case is now in the hands of the federal authorities. His lawyer could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine is a major naval base that supports the U.S. Navy’s operations in the region. The base employs thousands of people and is home to several naval vessels and ships.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of minors in all settings, including military bases. It also underscores the need for strict measures to prevent and investigate such crimes.
