Mickey Wayne Brazzell, Child Pornography, Florida 2010

A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to light in Florida, with convicted sex offender Mickey Wayne Brazzell, 56, of Yulee, pleading guilty to possessing child pornography. This heinous crime has earned him a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, up to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and a potential life term of supervised release. Additionally, Brazzell is required to forfeit his computer media.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney Robert E. O’Neill, who stated that Brazzell’s actions are a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation. Brazzell’s computer and other media were seized by investigators in June 2010, and further investigation revealed approximately 900 images, at least 191 of which depicted minor children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Brazzell’s history of sex offenses against minors is a chilling reminder of the need for continued vigilance in protecting our children. In 2000, he was convicted in state court in Jacksonville of lewd and lascivious conduct. His recent actions have earned him the attention of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which referred the matter to the Florida Attorney General’s Office in Jacksonville for further investigation.

The case was investigated by the former Child Predator Cybercrime Unit of the Florida Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

The case against Brazzell is a stark reminder of the importance of continued efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse. As we work to protect our children, we must also hold accountable those who would do them harm.

Brazzell’s sentencing date has not yet been set, but it is clear that he faces a lengthy and difficult road ahead. His guilty plea is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who work tirelessly to bring these perpetrators to justice.
