Felony Charges Land Fort Wayne Man Behind Bars

A 35-year-old man from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his involvement in a major heroin trafficking operation. Miguel Verduzco Velazquez, 35, was found guilty of possessing with the intent to distribute 1 kilogram or more of heroin and illegal reentry into the United States after conviction and removal for an aggravated felony.

According to court documents, the charges against Velazquez stem from a traffic stop conducted by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department on August 14, 2014. A K-9 unit alerted authorities to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, leading to a short chase and the apprehension of Velazquez. Approximately 1 kilogram of heroin was found in the vehicle, and investigators discovered that Velazquez had just delivered another kilogram of heroin to another individual.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Allen County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Anthony W. Geller handled the prosecution.

Velazquez changed his plea to guilty on counts 1 and 2 of the indictment on March 17, 2016. Count one charged Velazquez with knowingly and intentionally possessing with the intent to distribute heroin in excess of 1 kilogram, while count two charged him with illegal reentry into the United States after conviction and removal for an aggravated felony.

As a result of his guilty plea, Velazquez was sentenced to 180 months of imprisonment and 5 years of supervised release. The lengthy prison term reflects the severity of the crimes committed by Velazquez and the devastating impact that heroin trafficking can have on communities.
