MASON CITY, IA – Cleon Mitchell, Jr., 46, of Mason City, Iowa, will spend the next 12 years in federal prison after being sentenced on September 4, 2025, for possessing horrific child pornography. The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand, barely scratches the surface of the depravity Mitchell indulged in, according to court documents.
Mitchell, Jr. pled guilty on April 30, 2025, to one count of possession of child pornography. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior stretching from August 2022 through April 2024. Mitchell used the social media apps Kik and Snapchat to actively receive and hoard visual depictions of the sexual abuse of children, including those who were prepubescent and under the age of 12. It was Snapchat, ironically, that first flagged Mitchell’s account to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, triggering the investigation that ultimately brought him down.
Law enforcement’s search of Mitchell’s home and electronic devices confirmed the worst. Mitchell readily admitted to possessing the illegal material, directing officers to his phone. Forensic analysis uncovered a sickening cache of 30 videos and 50 images depicting the exploitation of children. The content wasn’t limited to simple possession; investigators found materials portraying sadistic and masochistic acts, further demonstrating the depravity of Mitchell’s obsession. This wasn’t a passive collection – it was active engagement with horrific content.
The federal case isn’t the only legal trouble Mitchell is facing. In February 2025, he also pled guilty in Cerro Gordo County District Court to Lascivious Acts with a Child, indicating a pattern of real-world abuse alongside the digital exploitation. The 144-month sentence was accompanied by a $600 fine and assessment, and a mandatory 5-year term of supervised release upon his eventual release from prison. In the federal system, there is no parole.
This case was brought forth under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. The Department of Justice initiative brings together federal, state, and local resources to prosecute predators and rescue victims. Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit led the prosecution, with crucial investigative work conducted by the Mason City Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations. Mitchell, Jr. remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending transfer to a designated federal prison facility. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the hidden predators lurking in our communities and the ongoing fight to protect vulnerable children.
