Law enforcement has nailed down yet another hard-hitting sentence in Florida’s battle against gun crime. James C. Mobley, a 43-year-old career criminal from Gainesville, was handed a 15-year federal prison term for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The sentence was announced by John P. Heekin, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, who emphasized that the lengthy punishment ensures community safety and serves as a stern reminder of the penalties for federal firearm violations.
Mobley was caught during a July 11, 2024, traffic stop in Gainesville, where officers found a loaded revolver and narcotics. The defendant’s guilty plea came just a day before his trial was scheduled to begin on April 28, 2025.
Chief Nelson Moya of the Gainesville Police Department reinforced the city’s zero-tolerance stance on gun crimes, declaring that those who bring firearms and drugs to their streets will be found and held accountable. Mobley’s sentence includes five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The investigation leading to Mobley’s conviction was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Harley W. Ferguson and Adam Hapner prosecuted the case.
This sentence is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that pools the Department of Justice’s resources to combat illegal immigration, eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguard communities from violent crime.
