Leury Mojica, 22 years old from Bronx, New York, was today sentenced to 108 months’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Carol Bagley Amon. The sentence was handed down for Mojica’s violent crimes committed at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC-Brooklyn).
Mojica pleaded guilty in April 2025 to assaulting a federal correction officer and attempting to murder a fellow inmate during his time at MDC-Brooklyn. According to court filings, on February 28, 2023, Mojica participated in a knife attack on another inmate, severely wounding the victim.
The brutal attack included Mojica physically restraining the victim, allowing another inmate to stab him multiple times. The assault left the victim with lacerations and puncture wounds across his face, neck, lower back, and arms. Additionally, on August 24, 2024, Mojica assaulted a federal correction officer, resulting in a contusion to the officer’s face.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr., emphasized the severe consequences for inmates who endanger the safety of detention centers, stating that holding incarcerated individuals accountable serves as a deterrent. FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia called Mojica’s actions combative and reckless, noting his intent to deter any further lawless conduct in federal detention centers.
Mojica was arraigned in February 2022 on charges related to multiple robberies before the violent incidents at MDC-Brooklyn. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman is handling the prosecution of this case. The defendant’s docket number is E.D.N.Y. Docket No. 25-CR-13 (CBA).
