ST. PAUL, MN – A five-pound package of methamphetamine shipped across state lines landed two men in federal prison this week, the result of a joint investigation by multiple federal agencies. The bust highlights the continued flow of illicit drugs into Greater Minnesota, despite increased law enforcement efforts.
Molandas Johnson, 26, of Los Angeles, initiated the scheme, personally shipping the methamphetamine through the U.S. Postal Service on July 20, 2021. Federal agents were already watching, observing Johnson deposit the package at a Los Angeles Post Office destined for an address in Bemidji, Minnesota. A search warrant was swiftly obtained, allowing authorities to intercept the deadly shipment.
Days later, agents conducted a controlled delivery. Luis Francisco Hernandez, 24, was observed picking up the package in Bemidji. The sting operation confirmed Hernandez’s role as the intended recipient, solidifying the link between the Los Angeles source and the Minnesota distribution network. Both men quickly faced federal charges.
On July 6, 2022, both Johnson and Hernandez entered guilty pleas. Johnson admitted to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, while Hernandez confessed to the distribution of controlled substances. The cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bradley M. Endicott and Drew R. Winter.
Yesterday, February 9, 2023, Judge Nancy E. Brasel handed down the sentences. Hernandez received nine years in prison, followed by four years of supervised release. Just last month, on January 25, 2023, Johnson was sentenced to a longer ten-year term, also followed by five years of supervised release. These sentences send a clear message: those who profit from poisoning communities will face significant consequences.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, drawing resources from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force. The agencies continue to work together to dismantle drug trafficking operations impacting the state.
