CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a move that has sparked little public attention, Moore Capito, a lawyer and politician, has been sworn in as United States Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia. President Donald J. Trump nominated Capito on June 30, 2025, and the United States Senate confirmed his nomination on October 7, 2025.
Capito was sworn in by the Honorable Chief United States District Judge Frank W. Volk in a private ceremony on Friday, October 10, 2025. In a statement, Capito expressed gratitude to President Trump and the United States Senate for the opportunity to serve as the United States Attorney.
As United States Attorney, Capito will oversee the prosecution of federal criminal offenses and the litigation of civil matters in the 23 counties within the Southern District of West Virginia. Capito has substantial experience in corporate and energy law and has practiced law with the Babst Calland law firm. He previously served in the West Virginia Legislature, where he was elected to four terms in the House of Delegates representing the 35th District in Kanawha County.
Capito earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Duke University and his law degree from Washington and Lee University. He is a lifelong West Virginian and is proud to raise his family in the Mountain State.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia will continue to oversee the prosecution of federal criminal offenses and the litigation of civil matters in the district. As United States Attorney, Capito will lead a staff of 37 attorneys and 40 non-attorney personnel located in offices in Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley.
Capito’s statement on taking office reflects his commitment to law and order and his desire to make West Virginia the safest place to live, work, and raise a family. He has vowed to work with law enforcement partners to protect communities and ensure the rule of law.
