Springfield Man Faces Long Stretch for Meth Conspiracy

SPRINGFIELD, MO – John P. Morris, 44, of Springfield, Missouri, is headed to federal prison for nearly 17 years after being sentenced for his central role in a methamphetamine distribution ring. U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool handed down the 16-year, eight-month sentence on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, with no chance of parole.

The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nhan D. Nguyen, stems from a conspiracy that ran from January 9, 2013, to January 15, 2015, in Greene County, Missouri. Morris pleaded guilty last June, admitting to knowingly participating in the distribution of the highly addictive drug. The investigation was a joint effort by the Springfield Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Law enforcement first hit Morris’s residence on January 9, 2013, executing a search warrant. They found him in a detached garage, along with 23.96 grams of methamphetamine stashed in a plastic sandwich bag. A search of the garage also revealed $2,851 in cash. Inside the main house, officers discovered a loaded Remington 12-gauge pistol grip shotgun in the bedroom, along with an additional 4.45 grams of methamphetamine split across three baggies. Several empty baggies and a digital scale were also recovered, clearly indicating drug packaging operations.

But the initial bust was just the tip of the iceberg. Nearly two years later, on January 15, 2015, authorities returned with another search warrant. This time, they found Morris hiding in a shed on the property. Inside, a staggering 275.6 grams of *pure* methamphetamine was discovered hidden inside an ammunition case next to the bed. The cash haul was even more substantial this time: $8,664 seized directly from Morris, plus another $125 hidden underneath the ammunition case. A residue-covered digital scale lay on a nearby wooden stool.

The combined weight of the methamphetamine seized – over 300 grams – coupled with the significant cash holdings and drug paraphernalia, painted a clear picture of a well-established and lucrative operation. The lengthy sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the federal government’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks in Missouri.

This conviction sends a message: dealing poison in the Western District of Missouri comes with severe consequences. Tom Larson, Acting United States Attorney, confirmed the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative effort of the involved agencies in bringing Morris to justice.
