GRENVILLE, MS – Today’s grim tally of criminal convictions swelled as Dennis Coleman, a 44-year-old resident of Mound Bayou, was handed a sentence that locks him away for over six years for the flagrant act of being a prohibited person with a firearm.
Coleman had previously pleaded guilty to the crime of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. Today, Chief Judge Debra M. Brown of the U.S. District Court in Mississippi doled out justice with a 74-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release. Upon sentencing, Coleman was promptly taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner emphasized the relentless pursuit of keeping firearms from criminals. ‘Keeping firearms out of criminals’ hands is always going to be a focus of this office,’ he said, singling out the Cleveland Police Department, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics for their role in making the community safer.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell echoed the sentiment, ‘This sentencing sends a clear message that those who repeatedly break the law and endanger others will be held accountable. Keeping firearms out of the hands of convicted felons is critical to protecting our communities.’
The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cleveland Police Department collaborated to investigate the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Mims leading the prosecution.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN strengthens community trust and supports organizations that prevent violence before it happens. The program focuses on strategic enforcement priorities and measures results for the safety of all neighborhoods.
