Rochester, NY – In a shocking turn of events, Tyshawn Simmons, 31, aka ‘Ty’, has been charged with murder in connection with a long-running drug trafficking conspiracy in Rochester. Simmons is accused of shooting Ryan Adams, 26, six times on October 31, 2012, while he was sitting in his car on Lincoln Street. Adams managed to escape the vehicle and walk 400 feet before collapsing.
According to the third superseding indictment, Simmons was the leader of a group that conspired to possess and distribute large quantities of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana in the Rochester area. The indictment also charges Simmons and seven others, including Marquis McMillian, Melvin Hill, Franklin Brock Jr., Franklin Brock Sr., Patrick Christner, Tina McDonald, and Ciarra Crane, with various counts of drug trafficking, attempted murder, and firearms charges.
The murder charge against Simmons carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, a maximum of life, and a fine of $2,000,000. The defendant is also charged with discharging a firearm in connection with the murder, punishable by a mandatory minimum 10 years in prison, a maximum of life, and a $250,000 fine.
The investigation into Simmons’ group was led by the Rochester Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael Ciminelli, with assistance from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. The case has been ongoing for several years, with multiple superseding indictments filed along the way.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Everardo A. Rodriguez is handling the case, which is expected to go to trial soon. The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and Simmons is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The charges against Simmons and his co-defendants are serious, with some carrying maximum penalties of life in prison. The case is a reminder of the dangers of organized crime and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
The superseding indictment is the latest development in a long and complex case. As the trial approaches, the community can expect to hear more about the details of the conspiracy and the alleged crimes committed by Simmons and his co-defendants.
