Two Men Plead Guilty in Southeast DC Shooting
Two men have pleaded guilty to charges related to the murder of a young singer outside a bar and grill in Southeast Washington last fall. Michael Jones, 22, of Bladensburg, Md., has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed, and Khalil Davis, 23, of Washington D.C., has pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2017, outside the Uniontown Bar and Grill. According to a proffer of facts submitted at the plea hearing, the victim, Omar Rogers, 25, had been at the club earlier that night, where he had performed with his band, the ‘AJA Band.’
A verbal altercation ensued between Rogers and the two defendants, and Rogers accidentally backed his car into Davis’s vehicle, a 2001 red Oldsmobile Intrigue. As Rogers parked his vehicle behind the bar, Jones approached him and fired seven shots into the driver’s side window, striking Rogers five times. Jones then ran to where Davis was waiting and fled the scene with him.
Jones was arrested on Oct. 20, 2017, and Davis was arrested five days later. Both men have been in custody since their arrests and are set to be sentenced on Oct. 12, 2018, by the Honorable Judith Bartnoff.
U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Peter Newsham commended the work of the MPD and expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences. They also acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The case highlights the dangers of gun violence in the District and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. The guilty pleas bring a measure of closure for the family of Omar Rogers, who was tragically taken from them at a young age.
U.S. Attorney Liu stated, ‘The guilty pleas in this case demonstrate our commitment to holding individuals accountable for violent crimes in this community.’
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Bach, with the assistance of Investigative Analyst Zachary McMenamin, Paralegal Specialist Kelly Blakeney, and Victim/Witness Advocate James Brennan.
