Murdo Man Convicted of Possession of Firearm by a Prohibited Person
Grimy Times Investigation
A 41-year-old man from Murdo, South Dakota, has been convicted of possessing a firearm despite being prohibited from doing so due to a previous domestic violence conviction. Shaun Sporrer, of Murdo, appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on August 13, 2013, and pled guilty to the indictment that charged him with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The charge stems from an incident on March 1, 2013, when Sporrer pulled a revolver on a neighbor, who was unaware that Sporrer was a prohibited person due to his previous conviction.
The investigation was conducted by the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for November 4, 2013. Sporrer was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing.
This conviction highlights the importance of enforcing gun laws and preventing prohibited persons from possessing firearms. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates on the sentencing and any further developments.
