James Edward Moss Jr., Transporting a Minor with Intent to Engage in Sexual Activity, North Carolina 2023

FLORENCE, S.C. — The grim saga of child exploitation has once again played out in the courts as 40-year-old Myrtle Beach resident James Edward Moss, Jr., was sentenced to a federal term behind bars for his heinous crime of transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

In what can only be described as a horror story, evidence gathered during an investigation paints a chilling picture. In April 2022, the despicable Moss met a young girl online, lured her into his clutches, and transported her to a hotel room where he subjected her to unimaginable horrors. The depravity did not end there; between April 20 to April 23 of that year, Moss recorded multiple videos of himself engaging in sexual activity with the innocent minor.

United States District Judge Joseph Dawson, III, meted out justice by sentencing Moss to a staggering 55-month imprisonment. This sentence is to be followed by a mandatory 10-year term of court-ordered supervision, with no possibility of parole in the federal system. To add insult to injury, Moss must register as a sex offender and pay a $3,000 restitution fine to the traumatized victim.

The investigation into Moss’s despicable actions was a collaborative effort between the FBI Columbia field office and the Horry County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren Hummel and Bill Watkins led the prosecution of this case with unwavering determination.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project has been instrumental in identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals like Moss who sexually exploit children, as well as rescuing victims.
