Nathan William Juhala, a 66-year-old man from Black Hawk, South Dakota, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on February 5, 2018, for Attempted Enticement of a Minor Using the Internet. The sentence, handed down by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken in U.S. District Court, marks the end of a predatory digital trail that led straight to an undercover agent posing as a 15-year-old girl.
Juhala initiated contact after responding to a Craigslist advertisement, believing he was communicating with a minor. In reality, every message he sent was received by a law enforcement officer conducting a sting operation targeting online predators. Over the course of the exchange, Juhala made explicit statements indicating his intent to engage in sexual acts with the purported teenager.
The case was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a nationwide coalition dedicated to identifying and apprehending individuals who exploit minors through digital means. Evidence recovered during the investigation detailed a calculated effort by Juhala to build rapport with the fake minor, escalating to discussions about meeting in person for sexual purposes.
Charged on February 22, 2017, Juhala pleaded guilty to the federal offense, avoiding a trial but facing the full weight of the sentencing guidelines. In addition to his decade-long prison term, he was ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence and to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case, emphasizing the danger posed by adults who use the anonymity of the internet to target vulnerable youth. “This sentence sends a clear message,” Collins stated. “Law enforcement is watching. These crimes will be met with relentless pursuit and serious consequences.”
Following the sentencing, Juhala was immediately remanded into the custody of the United States Marshals Service. The case underscores the ongoing threat of online predators and the aggressive efforts by federal and task force authorities to intercept them before real harm occurs.
