On April 7, 2017, Nathaniel Smith, 30, of Aurora, Colorado, was sentenced to 156 months of imprisonment, followed by 15 years of supervised release, for enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in January 2016, Smith used his cell phone and internet-based messaging and video chatting services, including Kik and Skype, to entice a 13-year-old female to engage in sexual activity.

Smith was arrested in New London on January 25, 2016, after he traveled from Colorado to meet the girl. He has been detained since his arrest.

On December 13, 2016, Smith pleaded guilty to one count of enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy V. Gifford.

The matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New London Police Department and Connecticut State Police. U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea presided over the case.

Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, stated, ‘The sentence imposed today reflects the seriousness of the defendant’s crimes and the need to protect children from exploitation and harm.’

Smith’s crimes highlight the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilance in keeping children safe in the digital age.
