Navajo Man Gets 7 Years for Assault in Indian Country

Marty Manuelito, a 46-year-old Albuquerque man and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.

The crime took place on April 23, 2017, at the victim’s residence on the Navajo Nation. Manuelito, along with Derwin Williams, 44, and Joelson Talk, 45, attacked the victim to retrieve a firearm. The victim suffered multiple lacerations, a broken tooth, fractures to his spine and nose, and a concussion, requiring immediate medical attention.

Manuelito pleaded guilty on November 5, 2020. After serving his sentence, he will be subject to three years of supervised release. Williams was sentenced to three years in prison, while Talk received a nine-year and nine-month sentence.

The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office and the Navajo Nation Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Marshall prosecuted the case.

The assault was a brazen and violent act that left the victim with severe physical and emotional trauma. Manuelito’s sentence reflects the severity of the crime and serves as a reminder that violent behavior will not be tolerated in our communities.

The Navajo Nation has a zero-tolerance policy for violence, and we will continue to work with federal authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the need for residents to report suspicious activity to the authorities.
