Naomi Martinez, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, New Mexico 2026

Naomi Martinez, a 24-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, stabbed a man in the face, head, and neck with a kitchen knife during a dispute in Prewitt, New Mexico, on January 6, 2026. The victim suffered serious bodily harm. Martinez pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and now faces up to 10 years in prison.

The FBI’s Gallup Resident Agency, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon is prosecuting Martinez.

Martinez’s guilty plea marks the latest development in the case, which will now move to sentencing. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies have been working to crack down on violent crime in New Mexico, particularly on the Navajo Nation.
