Nazeem Francis, Murder, New York 2018
Seven defendants have been charged with a string of violent crimes in Manhattan federal court, including murder, robbery, narcotics, and firearms offenses. The charges were announced by Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, William F. Sweeney Jr., the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Dermot Shea, Commissioner of the New York City Police Department.
The defendants include Nazeem Francis, also known as Naz, Jonathan Colon, also known as Johnny Blaze, Julio Ozuna, also known as JJ, Prince Gaines, Erick Oleaga, Victor Martinez, and Khalil Suggs, also known as KI.
According to the allegations in the Superseding Indictment, Francis, Colon, and Ozuna aided and abetted the shooting and killing of Christopher Pierce in the Bronx on September 3, 2018, following the attempted robbery of Pierce’s friend, a marijuana dealer.
The defendants are also charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine from 2018 to March 2020. Colon, Ozuna, Gaines, Oleaga, Martinez, and Suggs are accused of brandishing a firearm and aiding and abetting the same in furtherance of the drug trafficking conspiracy.
Five defendants were arrested today and will be presented this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave. Two defendants were already in custody and will be presented at a later date.
The case has been assigned to United States District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil. Berman praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, as well as NYPD’s 43rd Police Precinct and Bronx Narcotics.
