CHARLOTTE, N.C.—David R. Lewis, a 49-year-old North Carolina House of Representatives member from Dunn, has pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a bank and failing to file an income tax return, according to Andrew Murray, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
Lewis, who has represented District 53 in the state since 2002, also owned and operated Lewis Farms, a farming corporation in North Carolina. He pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge David S. Cayer.
Documents reveal that on August 1, 2018, Lewis opened an account under ‘NC GOP, Inc.’, falsely claiming it was a registered corporation. He used the account to misappropriate campaign funds by disguising transfers from his campaign account, totaling $50,000 and $15,000, as contributions to the North Carolina Republican Party. These funds were then transferred to his personal accounts for Lewis Farms and rent.
Lewis also admitted to failing to file a tax return for 2018. The case was investigated by the FBI and IRS-Criminal Investigation. Prosecutors include Erica O’Brien Waymack, James C. Mann, William T. Stetzer, and Dana O. Washington.
This incident marks another chapter in the ongoing saga of political corruption in North Carolina. The Department of Justice celebrates its 150th anniversary, highlighting the agency’s commitment to justice.
