Anthony Patterson, Theft of Government Money, Massachusetts 2013

A New Bedford man is facing federal charges after allegedly stealing nearly $100,000 in Social Security disability benefits, officials said.

Anthony Patterson, 62, of New Bedford, was charged with one count of theft of government money in connection with the scam, which allegedly took place from May 2013 to May 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

During that time, Patterson is accused of stealing approximately $92,582 in benefits, officials said. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.

Patterson will make an appearance in federal court in Boston at a later date, officials said. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Nagelberg of the Major Crimes Unit.

The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division is providing assistance with the case, officials said.

The details contained in the charging document are allegations, and Patterson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy praised the work of investigators in bringing the case to light. “We will continue to aggressively pursue those who seek to defraud the government and cheat the system,” he said in a statement.

The case is a reminder that Social Security fraud will not be tolerated, officials said.
