Calvin Mark Wilson, Heroin and Marijuana Trafficking, NC 2023

NEW BERN, NC – Calvin Mark Wilson, 35, known on the streets as “Bali,” is headed to federal prison for 35 years – 420 months – after being convicted of orchestrating a large-scale heroin and marijuana operation in and around New Bern. U.S. Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr. announced the sentence, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle, marking a significant blow to drug trafficking in Eastern North Carolina.

The case, dubbed OCDETF Operation 190, carries a somber weight. The operation is named in memory of New Bern Police Department Officer Alexander Thalmann, tragically killed in the line of duty on March 31, 2014, by associates connected to Wilson’s criminal enterprise. This wasn’t just about drugs; it was about the ripple effects of poison spreading through a community and the ultimate sacrifice made by one of its protectors. The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) – a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local agencies – brought down Wilson and his crew.

The multi-year investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the New Bern Police Department, revealed a sophisticated network. Wilson, alongside Damien Lamonte Brown, flooded the streets with heroin sourced from New York City. Investigators documented over twenty controlled purchases between November 2016 and July 2017, witnessing firsthand the flow of drugs and the presence of firearms among the organization’s members. The operation wasn’t just about intercepting street-level deals; it was about dismantling the entire supply chain.

A key turning point came with the authorization of a federal wiretap on Wilson and two co-defendants’ phones in 2017. Intercepted calls and texts painted a clear picture: Wilson was directing the movement of kilogram-level quantities of heroin from New York to New Bern. A crucial intercept led to a bust – Wilson and two accomplices were caught traveling back from New York with 3 pounds of marijuana and seven bars of heroin cutting agent. Further investigation revealed hundreds of grams of heroin had arrived separately that same day, confirming the scope of the operation.

On October 24, 2017, ATF agents executed a coordinated series of arrests and searches at five residences linked to the organization. The haul included over a kilogram of heroin and twenty firearms – a chilling reminder of the violence that often accompanies the drug trade. Wilson was convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute one thousand grams or more of heroin, and possession with intent to distribute a quantity of marijuana. His co-conspirator, Damien Lamonte Brown, aka “Dame,” 36, of New Bern, NC, received 360 months in prison after a jury convicted him in August 2018 of similar charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon. Another key player, Derrick Lamont Davis, aka “Gucci,” 35, of Kinston, NC, was sentenced to 48 months for conspiring to distribute heroin.

This sentencing isn’t just about locking up one man; it’s a message to those who prey on vulnerable communities. The OCDETF Operation 190, born from tragedy and fueled by relentless investigation, has dealt a significant blow to a dangerous criminal network. The streets of New Bern, and the memory of Officer Thalmann, are a little safer tonight.
