Extortion in the 21st Century: New Jersey Man Sentenced to Two Years

Bangor, Maine – In a shocking case of extortion, 51-year-old Patrick Curley, a New Jersey native, was sentenced to two years in prison and one year of supervised release for attempting to extort $130,000 from a Hampden-based security firm.

According to court documents, Curley applied for a job at Vescom in March 2010 but was met with rejection. In a brazen move, he falsely accused the company’s Senior Vice President of sexual harassment and discrimination and threatened to sue. He then went on to contact Vescom employees and staff counsel, representing himself and an attorney, in an attempt to extort $130,000 to settle the claims.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which uncovered the false claims and the extortion scheme. Curley’s claims of sexual harassment and discrimination were found to be baseless and intended to deceive and intimidate the victim.

U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced the sentencing, stating that Curley’s actions were ‘brazen’ and ‘extremely serious.’ The Assistant U.S. Attorney, Gail Fisk Malone, praised the FBI for their tireless efforts in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Curley pleaded guilty to the extortion charges on April 7, 2013. His sentence is a stark reminder that extortion will not be tolerated in any form and that those who attempt to deceive and intimidate others will be held accountable.

The case highlights the importance of vigilance in the digital age and the need for individuals to be cautious when dealing with online communications. It also serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit others for personal gain.
