Morris Summers, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2022

New Orleans native Morris Summers, 31, has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The charge stems from Summers’ possession of a Springfield Armory Model Hellcat, a nine-millimeter caliber semi-automatic pistol, on June 26, 2022.

Summers’ guilty plea comes as no surprise; he has a prior federal conviction under his belt. In a previous case before United States District Judge Susie Morgan, Summers was found guilty of conspiring to distribute crack and conspiring to possess firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking. His latest transgression adds another layer of criminality to his record.

Sentencing has been scheduled for April 27, 2023, where Summers could face up to 15 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Additionally, he must pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country. The initiative fosters community trust, supports organizations that prevent violence, sets strategic enforcement priorities, and measures outcomes to ensure effectiveness.

Investigating this case were the New Orleans Police Department, the Louisiana State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney David Haller is handling the prosecution.
