It’s a grim day for the streets of Baton Rouge as Xavier Johnson, 38, has been found guilty by a federal jury of a massive conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine. United States Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr., made the announcement, detailing how Johnson was connected to a sophisticated network that stretched from the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola to sources in California.
After a three-day trial before Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick, the jury unanimously convicted Johnson of orchestrating the distribution and possession of illegal drugs. The evidence presented showed that he conspired with inmates inside Angola and others on the outside to funnel drugs from California into Louisiana. Federal and state law enforcement officials played a crucial role in gathering evidence, including forensic data analysis that bolstered witness testimonies.
Johnson’s involvement in the drug ring was extensive, with the jury learning that he supervised couriers, personally distributed controlled substances, and attempted to smuggle drugs to inmates at Angola. Assistant United States Attorneys Paul L. Pugliese and April Leon Johnson prosecuted the case, ensuring justice for the community.
The consequences of Johnson’s convictions are severe, with a potential sentence of 20 years imprisonment in federal prison, substantial fines, and mandatory forfeiture. Additionally, he faces a minimum three-year term of supervised release.
This case was a collaborative effort between numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Postal Inspection Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Louisiana Department of Corrections, 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and the St. Francisville Police Department.
