NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Viet Nguyen, age 30, a resident of Gonzales, Louisiana, was sentenced to one (1) year and one (1) day of imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and a $500.00 mandatory special assessment fee after pleading guilty to four counts of interstate travel in aid of racketeering and one count of using a communication facility to facilitate a drug trafficking crime.
Nguyen’s sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo on May 1, 2024. Nguyen’s crimes involved working with a supplier in California to negotiate and purchase marijuana, which was then shipped to a warehouse in Kenner and distributed to various locations in New Orleans and other cities.
According to court documents, Nguyen flew from New Orleans to California on four separate occasions in 2019 to deliver money for the purchase of marijuana. The prosecution is part of an extensive investigation by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF).
OCDETF is a joint federal, state, and local cooperative approach to combat drug trafficking and is the nation’s primary tool for disrupting and dismantling major drug trafficking organizations. The investigation was conducted by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Homeland Security Investigations.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney André Jones of the Narcotics Unit. This case highlights the scope of the problem of interstate drug trafficking and the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat this threat.
The OCDETF investigation has resulted in significant disruption to the drug trafficking organization, and Nguyen’s sentencing brings one of the key players to justice. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests and charges are expected in the coming months.
Nguyen’s crimes demonstrate the brazen and complex nature of modern-day drug trafficking. His actions put profits over people and fueled the opioid epidemic that is devastating communities across the country.
