Nelson Raymond, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2021

New Orleans, LA – Nelson Raymond, a local man, was meted out a stiff sentence for his illegal possession of firearms. U.S. District Court Judge Wendy B. Vitter sentenced Raymond to seventy (70) months behind bars, followed by three (3) years of supervised release after his prison term concludes. A mandatory special assessment fee of $100 was also imposed.

The saga began when police spotted Raymond with a firearm in his waistband on Olive Street and Hamilton Street. The situation escalated when an investigation revealed that someone had placed a rifle inside Raymond’s vehicle. Subsequent searches unearthed three additional firearms, leading to the charges against him.

Raymond’s sentence exceeds the United States Sentencing Guidelines, reflecting the severity of his crime. He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2).

This case is a testament to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing community safety. Launched on May 26, 2021, the strategy focuses on fostering trust within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Mike Trummel prosecuted the charges as part of the Violent Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
