New Orleans Man Guilty of Mail Fraud

Jordan A. Sanchez, a 27-year-old resident of New Orleans, has pleaded guilty to mail fraud in a case involving a fraudulent oil spill claim. Sanchez submitted a fake claim to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, stating that he lost his job with a local catering company due to the oil spill.

However, an investigation revealed that the catering company never existed, and Sanchez never worked there. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility issued a $27,000 check to Sanchez, which he cashed after admitting to the FBI that the claim was fraudulent.

Sanchez faces a maximum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release following imprisonment. Sentencing is scheduled for October 17, 2013, at 10:00am.

The case was brought as part of the National Center for Disaster Fraud’s (NCDF) nationwide initiative to protect available funds and assistance for those victims of natural and man-made disasters, including the Gulf oil spill.

The NCDF is urging anyone with knowledge of fraud, waste, abuse, or allegations of mismanagement involving disaster relief operations to contact them through their hotline at (866) 720-5721, fax at (225) 334-4707, email at disaster@leo.gov, or by writing to National Center for Disaster Fraud, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-4909.

The case was investigated by special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro Latsis. Sanchez’s guilty plea is a significant step in holding individuals accountable for attempting to take advantage of disaster relief funds.

The Gulf oil spill was a devastating event that affected countless individuals and businesses in the region. It is essential that those who attempt to exploit these funds are brought to justice, and Sanchez’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions.
