Busted: Angelina Williams, 60, of New Orleans, is behind bars on six felony counts after allegedly ripping off Louisiana’s Medicaid system for nearly $50,000. The Louisiana Attorney General’s office announced her arrest Thursday in a case that exposes gaping holes in behavioral health billing oversight.
Williams, who holds no license to practice mental health care, stands accused of using the National Provider Identifier of a dead acquaintance to submit phony claims. With that stolen identity, she allegedly funneled false Medicaid paperwork through a provider network, racking up $48,609.85 in fraudulent payments over months of illicit billing.
But the scam didn’t stop there. Prosecutors say Williams hired a licensed social worker and illegally billed their services under her fake credentials for nearly a full year. She now faces four counts of Medicaid fraud, one count of forgery, and one count of filing or maintaining false public records—felonies that could bury her in prison time.
The takedown was executed by Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, which has ramped up investigations amid new legislative pressure. The arrest follows the passage of HB 211, championed by State Representative Dodie Horton, aimed at tightening oversight of behavioral health services under Medicaid.
“Medicaid welfare fraud not only steals from taxpayers but also jeopardizes much-needed services for our State’s most vulnerable,” Landry said in a statement. “My office and I will continue to work tirelessly to uncover, investigate, and arrest criminals who defraud Medicaid.”
State officials are urging whistleblowers and insiders to come forward. To report suspected Medicaid fraud, call the Attorney General’s hotline at 888-799-6885 or visit http://www.agjefflandry.com/MedicaidFraud. With billions in public funds at stake, Landry’s team vows this arrest is just the beginning.
