Kim Cassell, Federal Grant Money Embezzlement, Louisiana 2012

Kim Cassell, a 42-year-old New Orleans resident, has been charged with stealing over $140,000 in federal grant money meant for Open World Family Services, a non-profit organization that aimed to help students in the greater New Orleans area grow academically.

According to a Bill of Information filed last Friday, Cassell knowingly used the grant money for her personal benefit between March 2010 and June 2012. This brazen act of theft has left many wondering how someone in a position of trust could betray the public’s faith.

Open World Family Services was a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation that relied heavily on federal grants to fund its programs. By embezzling funds meant for the organization, Cassell not only cheated the community but also compromised the integrity of the non-profit sector.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced the charges against Cassell, reiterating that the Bill of Information is merely an accusation and that the defendant’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, Cassell faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten years, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and restitution to the U.S. Department of Education.

The investigation into Cassell’s actions was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Education, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Office of the Louisiana Legislative Auditor. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharan E. Lieberman will be handling the prosecution of this case.
