Angela Aquino, Wire Fraud, New York 2025

⏱ 2 min read

A brazen scheme to swindle $1 million from New York City’s campaign finance system has landed a candidate for Public Advocate in federal hot water. Angela Aquino, a 2025 hopeful for the citywide office, was arrested and charged with wire fraud in Brooklyn.

According to the feds, Aquino allegedly inflated her campaign’s bank account to qualify for public matching funds, raking in the cash despite being entitled to none. The scheme, which unfolded over several months, was designed to exploit a program meant to reduce corruption in city politics.

‘New Yorkers deserve better than crooked politicians trying to line their pockets with taxpayer dollars,’ said Joseph Nocella, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Aquino is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon by a federal magistrate. The feds are holding her accountable for her alleged crimes, which include attempting to steal $1 million from New York taxpayers.
