Douglas Engstrom, a 36-year-old former US Navy officer, pleaded guilty to attempted interstate coercion and enticement of a minor in Central Islip, NY. Engstrom communicated online with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl and attempted to meet her to engage in sexual activity. The guilty plea was entered in federal court, where Engstrom also admitted to possessing over 600 images and videos of child sexual abuse material.
According to court filings, Engstrom told the individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl that he wanted to have oral, anal, and vaginal sex with her. The former Navy officer faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life in prison when sentenced.
The guilty plea was announced by Joseph Nocella, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and James C. Barnacle, Jr., Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, which maintains its commitment to holding accountable sexual predators who prey on children.
US Attorney Nocella stated that the prosecution demonstrates the commitment to using every law enforcement tool available to prosecute and punish predators who exploit children. FBI Assistant Director in Charge Barnacle added that Engstrom exploited vulnerable citizens, including children, to satisfy his perverted desires instead of honoring his oath to protect the country.
