Newell Cooper, 34, Sentenced to 86 Months in Prison for Heroin Trafficking
A LaPorte, Indiana man has been sentenced to 86 months in prison for possessing heroin with the intent to deliver, announced U.S. Attorney Kirsch.
Newell Cooper, age 34, of LaPorte, Indiana was sentenced before District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio for the crime, which occurred on February 23, 2017.
According to documents in this case, Cooper possessed a quantity of heroin on his person on the specified date, which he intended to sell.
Cooper has a long history of run-ins with the law, with five prior felony convictions, five misdemeanor convictions, and 28 other contacts with law enforcement. He has also violated probationary sentences twice.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with assistance from the Michigan City Police Department and LaPorte County Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Schaffer handled the case.
Cooper’s sentence includes 86 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.
