MASON CITY, IA – Thomas Alan Newman, 60, of Swaledale, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after admitting to a sickening habit: possessing, receiving, and distributing child pornography. Newman was sentenced on April 25, 2024, to 72 months – six years – behind bars by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.
The case unraveled in May 2021 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) flagged Newman’s Facebook activity. A report to law enforcement revealed a user actively involved in trafficking in child pornography. A subsequent search warrant of Newman’s account uncovered chats where he not only solicited illicit content but actively conspired with another individual to create a group dedicated to sharing and trading it.
Investigators discovered Newman wasn’t just a passive receiver. He admitted to sharing approximately 50 videos depicting horrific abuse – content portraying sadistic, masochistic acts, and the sexual exploitation of infants and toddlers. The details, as presented in court, paint a disturbing picture of a man deliberately seeking out and disseminating material that exploits the most vulnerable victims.
Beyond the prison sentence, Newman will face a $30,000 fine and assessment. Upon his release, he’ll be subject to a five-year term of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender – a permanent marker on his record. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system; Newman will serve his full sentence.
Newman is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison facility. This prosecution was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project pools resources from federal, state, and local agencies to bring predators to justice and rescue victims.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, and the prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit. Court file information can be found at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. The case file number is 23-CR-3016.
