Drug Trafficking: 9.9 Kilograms of Marijuana Seized at Cyril King Airport
St. Thomas, USVI – In a brazen attempt to smuggle narcotics into the US Virgin Islands, two men have been indicted for conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Amari Story, 23, and Kurt Reovan, 38, face serious charges after a massive marijuana haul was seized at the Cyril King Airport.
According to the indictment, on February 13, 2015, Story and Reovan arrived at the Cyril King Airport on a flight from the mainland United States, carrying approximately 9.9 kilograms of marijuana in a suitcase. A search of the luggage led to their arrest and subsequent detention.
The indictment charges Story and Reovan with conspiracy to distribute narcotics, possession with intent to distribute, and use of a communication facility to facilitate a narcotics crime. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison for the conspiracy and possession counts, and four years for the use of communication facility to facilitate a drug crime, along with a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe emphasized that an indictment is merely a formal charging document and is not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation was led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant United States Attorney David White will be prosecuting the case.
The seizure of 9.9 kilograms of marijuana is a significant blow to the drug trafficking trade in the USVI. The Cyril King Airport has been identified as a key entry point for narcotics into the territory.
The indictment serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the USVI. Law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations.
