Niagara Falls Man Gets 1 Year for Gun Charge
BUFFALO, N.Y.–Walter McTyere, 30, of Niagara Falls, N.Y., will spend the next year behind bars for possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., McTyere was convicted of the crime and sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to one year in prison.
The sentencing comes as a result of a lengthy investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Resident Agent in Charge Frank Christiano and the Niagara County Drug Task Force, under the direction of Sheriff James Votour.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Alsup, who is handling the case, revealed that McTyere was found in possession of a pistol with an obliterated serial number during an investigation into illicit firearm transactions in Niagara Falls in January and February 2012.
McTyere’s one-year sentence is the culmination of a joint effort between law enforcement agencies to combat gun crime in the area.
The sentencing is a stark reminder of the consequences of possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. McTyere’s actions put innocent lives at risk and disrupted the community.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
