LAKELAND, FL – A hail of gunfire erupted near Iowa Avenue and Plum Street in Lakeland on January 30th, leaving eleven people wounded. Now, two men are facing the music for their roles in the brazen attack. Nicholas Quinton Hanson, 31, of Lakeland, and Marcus Dewonn Mobley, Jr., 23, also of Lakeland, have both pleaded guilty to federal weapons charges, admitting to violating the law as convicted felons.
According to court documents, Mobley owned the blue Nissan Altima used in the drive-by. Investigators quickly zeroed in on the vehicle, and subsequent analysis of Hanson and Mobley’s cell phone records revealed communication between the two both before and after the shooting. More damningly, DNA recovered from spent shell casings at the scene directly linked both men to the gunfire.
Hanson pleaded guilty to possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, while Mobley admitted to possessing both a firearm and ammunition, also while prohibited due to prior felony convictions. Each man now faces a potential 15-year federal prison sentence. Sentencing dates remain unconfirmed, leaving victims and the community awaiting justice.
The investigation, led by the ATF’s SPARTA unit, wasn’t a solo effort. The FBI, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Lakeland Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Attorney’s Office for Florida’s 10th Judicial Circuit all contributed to building the case. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher F. Murray is prosecuting the case, aiming to secure a lengthy prison term for both defendants.
Federal officials are touting the case as a win for “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a broad initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local communities. But for the eleven victims of the Lakeland shooting, and for a city still reeling from the attack, the program’s lofty goals ring hollow until accountability is served.
