Nicholas Stephen Woodyard, Child Pornography Distribution, Florida 2024

Nicholas Stephen Woodyard, 30, of St. Augustine, Florida, is headed to federal prison for 10 years and 8 months after admitting to distributing child sexual abuse materials. U.S. District Judge Brian J. Davis handed down the sentence, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, ensuring Woodyard will remain under federal watch for the rest of his life. The court also ordered him to pay $5,000 in restitution to one of his victims—a small but symbolic measure in a case riddled with irreversible harm.

Woodyard pleaded guilty on March 5, 2021, capping a digital trail that led investigators straight to his home in St. Augustine. He is the second brother convicted in this case. His twin, Patrick Woodyard, was sentenced in December 2020 to 15 years and 8 months after pleading guilty on August 28, 2020. Both were indicted on March 4, 2020, on federal charges of distribution, receipt, and possession of child sexual abuse images and videos—crimes that the DOJ has aggressively pursued under Project Safe Childhood.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) launched the probe after detecting the online upload of a single image showing a child being sexually abused. That digital breadcrumb traced back to the Woodyard brothers’ shared residence. A subsequent search warrant execution uncovered electronic devices stuffed with hundreds of files depicting the sexual abuse of children—some as young as toddlers. The graphic nature of the material shocked even seasoned investigators.

Forensic analysis of Nicholas Woodyard’s devices revealed even darker transgressions. Agents discovered he had attempted to secretly record close family members while they were naked. His digital footprint included searches, writings, and recorded intentions pointing toward incestuous acts. These findings painted a picture not just of a passive consumer, but of an active predator grooming and exploiting his own circle.

“Children are the most vulnerable victims, and predators such as this use extraordinary means and sophisticated deceptions to target and victimize innocent children across our communities,” said HSI Jacksonville Assistant Special Agent in Charge K. Jim Phillips. “Thanks to the incredible work and dedication of our HSI special agents and our partners with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, this predator will no longer have access to such victims.”

The case was jointly investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kelly S. Karase. It stands as one of many prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, the DOJ’s nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the rising tide of child sexual exploitation. The program unites federal, state, and local forces to hunt down offenders and rescue victims before more damage is done. For more information, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
