Burlington, Vermont – In a shocking turn of events, a 33-year-old Indian national has been sentenced for conspiring to distribute controlled substances in the state of Vermont. Nitin Mishra, a resident of Jaipur, India, was extradited from Albania to face charges related to an international drug trafficking operation.
According to court records, Mishra conspired with two Vermont residents and other individuals to send multiple shipments of controlled substances, including opioids and misbranded drugs, into the United States. The investigation revealed that the conspiracy involved tens of thousands of pills, and included the Schedule II controlled substance Tapentadol, as well as the Schedule IV controlled substances, Tramadol, Carisoprodol, and Zolpidem.
Mishra’s role in the conspiracy was to work with his co-conspirators to reship and distribute these drugs to individuals located throughout the United States. The investigation, which was led by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Rutland City Police Department, revealed a complex web of international drug trafficking.
Nitin Mishra was sentenced to time served, having already spent approximately 28 months in custody. He was also ordered to pay $7,300 in forfeiture. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge William K. Sessions III.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman, who commended the investigatory efforts of the agencies involved. The defense was represented by Robert L. Sussman, Esq.
The sentencing of Nitin Mishra marks a significant victory in the fight against international drug trafficking. As Vermont continues to grapple with the opioid crisis, this case serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
The full extent of Mishra’s involvement in the conspiracy is still not clear, but it is evident that his actions had a significant impact on the lives of many individuals in the United States.
