A massive multi-state drug smuggling prison ring has been dismantled in Pennsylvania, with 27 defendants charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, and racketeering crimes, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
The indictment, returned on January 18, 2019, charges 25 defendants with conspiring to distribute large volumes of drugs, including 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, 1 kilogram or more of heroin, fentanyl and a fentanyl analog, oxycodone, synthetic cannabinoids, and buprenorphine, commonly known as SubOxone.
The 27 defendants include Noah Landfried, 34, of Moon Township, who is charged with conspiring to distribute drugs and laundering drug proceeds, as well as Mario Allen, 40, of USP-Lee in Virginia, Larry Benavides, 43, of the Clinton County Jail in Pennsylvania, and 23 others.
According to the indictment, the defendants used an elaborate money laundering scheme to pay for the drugs, which were smuggled into federal prisons facilities by saturating paper and mailing it to inmates.
The indictment seeks forfeiture of the defendants’ financial accounts, as well as property acquired with the proceeds of the crimes.
U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said, ‘Thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team of investigators and prosecutors, we have dismantled one of the largest prison drug smuggling rings in the country.’
The defendants face minimum and maximum sentences ranging from at least 10 years to up to life in prison for Count 1, up to 20 years for Count 2, and up to 5 years for other counts.
