NEW ORLEANS, LA – Brandon Turner, 39, of New Orleans, is facing a potential lifetime behind bars after being indicted on federal drug and gun charges, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced today. The indictment, handed down on June 14, 2024, alleges Turner was actively involved in narcotics trafficking and illegally possessed firearms.
The charges are serious. Count One accuses Turner of possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances, violating Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(B), and 841(b)(1)(C). Count Two alleges he possessed a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking crime, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(i). And Count Three slams him with being a felon in possession of both a firearm and ammunition, breaching Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).
If convicted on all counts, Turner could receive a minimum of 5 years and up to 40 years imprisonment, along with a fine of up to $5,000,000 and at least 4 years of supervised release for Count One. Count Two carries a minimum 5-year sentence, potentially escalating to life in prison, plus a $250,000 fine and up to 5 years supervised release. Count Three adds another potential 15 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release. A $100 mandatory special assessment fee will also be applied to each count if he’s found guilty.
The feds say the trouble began on January 30, 2024, when Turner was arrested on suspicion of narcotics trafficking. A subsequent search of his apartment turned up a detectable amount of both fentanyl and cocaine. Investigators also seized a Glock Model 43, 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol, along with ammunition. The discovery of the gun is what really ratchets up the potential sentence, linking it directly to the alleged drug operation.
This case is being touted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The Department launched a strengthened PSN strategy in 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting local organizations, and targeting enforcement efforts.
U.S. Attorney Evans was quick to point out that the indictment is simply an accusation, and Turner is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The investigation was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Troy Bell of the Violent Crime Unit is handling the prosecution.
