Norfolk Woman Sentenced for Tax Refund Heist
A Norfolk woman has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for her role in a massive tax refund scam. Tanya Evans, 34, was also ordered to pay $2,087,571.14 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
According to court documents, Evans and a co-conspirator’s scheme was discovered in 2013 after a local check cashing business noticed that she had cashed over $2 million in U.S. Treasury checks. Evans claimed she was paid $200 per check to cash the treasury checks in violation of the company’s policies.
A subsequent IRS investigation determined that she cashed 640 checks that totaled just over $2 million in fraudulent income tax refunds. Evans waived indictment and pled guilty to criminal information on December 30, 2014.
The scheme was investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Internal Revenue Service. Assistant United States Attorney Joseph L. Kosky prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States. U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente and IRS-Criminal Investigations Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Kelly made the announcement after sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith.
The case was prosecuted as part of the IRS’s ongoing efforts to combat tax refund fraud. Evans’ sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such schemes.
