ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Muhammad Adil Quraish, a former Air Force dentist from Alexandria, has entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role in a scheme that defrauded pandemic relief programs out of nearly $1.5 million.
Quraish, 35, is accused of conspiring with at least four co-conspirators between April 2020 and December 2021. They submitted fraudulent applications for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL), programs intended to support businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Court documents reveal that Quraish intentionally inflated payroll information, creating falsified records and IRS tax forms. He falsely certified these forms to receive loans his businesses were not entitled to. The fraudulent proceeds were personally profited by Quraish and co-conspirators, totaling $1,471,599.
Quraish used a portion of the fraud proceeds to invest in cryptocurrency. He is scheduled for sentencing on October 22, facing up to five years in prison. However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
The investigation into Quraish’s fraud was conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Office of Special Investigations for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force, the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General, the IRS Criminal Investigation, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary H. Ray is prosecuting the case.
