PROVIDENCE, RI – A dramatic admission of guilt was made today as Michael Darrah, a former benefits service representative with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Providence, pleaded guilty to a staggering array of federal charges that include bribery, extortion, and witness tampering.
Darrah, 47, from Taunton, MA, faced a six-count indictment for his alleged actions. He solicited and accepted bribes from veterans and their relatives, exploiting his position to approve dependent care and disability benefits in exchange for monetary payments. His crimes reached a new low when he tried to persuade a witness not to cooperate with the investigation, even urging them to lie about the nature of the payments.
The indicted offenses detail Darrah’s exploitation of his victims: he accepted approximately $3,385 from one veteran to expedite a disability benefits claim; $16,566 from another for the same purpose; and an additional $2,700 and a “gratuity” of around $5,000 from the third veteran, who was facing homelessness. Darrah’s greed knew no bounds, as he sought this money despite being warned about the veteran’s dire situation.
Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the charges, emphasizing that Darrah’s actions betrayed the trust placed in him by the VA and the veterans he was supposed to serve. Darrah is scheduled to be sentenced on October 14, 2025, with his fate resting in the hands of a federal district judge who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other statutory factors.
The case against Darrah has been spearheaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter I. Roklan and Ly T. Chin. The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General, supported by the FBI, Defense Criminal Investigative Service, United States Postal Inspection Service, and Veterans Administration Police.
This unsettling case serves as a stark reminder of the corruption that can fester within public institutions and the lengths some will go to for personal gain.
