PROVIDENCE, RI – Former drug trafficker and police attacker Kevin Malave was sentenced to three years of probation for illegal firearm possession, the first six months under home confinement with electronic monitoring. Malave’s prior criminal record includes convictions for drug trafficking and assaulting law enforcement.
The 33-year-old was arrested in 2017 after afoot pursuit where he discarded a firearm into a bin during his escape. He later made incriminating statements at a hospital, according to court documents.
In addition to the probation term, Malave has been flagged by Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative law enforcement initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. His sentence was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr., and announced by United States Attorney Stephen G. Dambruch and Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr.
Malave pleaded guilty in November 2017 to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerard B. Sullivan, with the assistance of Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. McAdams. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) assisted in the prosecution.
Malave’s sentence falls significantly short of the recommended 27-month prison term by the government. His criminal history includes eight arrests on 15 charges resulting in 12 counts of conviction since he was 18 years old.
